Although we are based out of Glen Ellyn,
We welcome and have members from all over.
We belong to:
In the fall of 1962 Hawthorn Garden Club was organized with 31 charter members. After 3 meetings the fledgling organization voted to affiliate with the Garden Clubs of Illinois, a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs.
Early members showed a great interest in flower arranging and flower shows, even attending the Chicago Flower and Garden show adorned in white gloves and hats.
Plant sales were one of the first fund raisers and have grown to a much larger scale as of today. 2018 being the best ever.
In September of 1978 HGC began their affiliation with the DuPage Convalescent Center by placing bud vases in every patient's room. Soon after, we began our Garden Therapy classes with residents and are still doing this monthly, last Thursday, during the Garden Club season which runs September thru June of the year.
In 1981 HGC undertook a huge project. Through hard work and potting parties at T&Z Nursery, the club raised $5,000 to have Tony Tyznik, of Morton Arboretum, design a landscape plan. This was implemented at each of the five Glen Ellyn Woods entrances. The club still maintains the corners today and were recognized by our parent National Garden Clubs with an Award in 2017.
Early on we donated to the GCI Scholarship Fund. In 1993-94 we began our own Scholarship Program donating yearly to College of DuPage to be awarded to a student studying Horticulture or related fields. HGC has expanded their philanthropic efforts to include We Grow Dreams and SCARCE.
Hawthorn Garden Club began as a means for neighbors to meet, share gardening interests and to help the community. Today this is still the focus of our Club.
We always welcome new members.
